This is a roundtable discussion on the appropriation of Thucydides, focusing especially on the 20th century and on contemporary politics from a global perspective. This discussion stems from the book Thucydides, In the Age of Extremes edited by current Spring Fellow Ivan Matijašić (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice) and Luca Iori (University of Parma). The book is open-access and published in th...

ΚΑΙΡΟΝ ΓΝΩΘΙ· The Ancient Practice of Contingency Planning In my talk I will examine how Hellenistic communities understood and applied contingency planning by conceptually pairing chance (tychē) with opportunity (kairos). Specifically, I will argue that while decision-makers recognized the inherently uncertain character of the future, they resorted to deliberative expertise to better “read” th...

Talk presented on Thursday, 1 December, 2022. Missing Persons and Recognition in the Greco-Roman World What happens when missing persons, after a long time has passed, find their way back and how are they accepted back into their family and community? A person who returns home after a long period of time has possibly changed and must eventually be recognized as the same person who left. Recogni...

there is no such thing as ancient greek because each city state had pretty much their own dialect of the hellenic language. (hellenic being ans umbrella term like latin languages italian, spanich, prtuguese french romanian) that is why greek authors created the dictionary of Hesychius of alexandira "Greek to Greek" greek is an invention of the 6th century sorry~!
What an amazing resource. I'm going into Koine Greek II in senminary and this was just the "bam bam bam" through 1st year Ancient Greek to get me up to speed. Thank you Professor Muellner and Belisi Gillespie for your time and effort.
When you discuss the three aspects in Ancient Greek, I wonder why is there only an aorist in the past tense and not the present tense. That is, why is there no present time, simple aspect, indicative active tense in Ancient Greek? You can also see its absence clearly in Hansen and Quinn's table on page 41 of Greek: An Intensive Course. It is furthermore interesting that in future time, there is a simple aspect as well, but that it is fused together with the progressive/repeated aspect.
Wonderful - thank you for this
😀😀😀these cheaters have more than 150 years that lie the ancient greek never existed the modern Greek was created by Byzantine church after divided from Roman empire
Thank you for sharing this
sorry, I'm confused. this play takes place during Heracles' 12th labor, but it was my understanding that he made the labours as atonement for killing Megara and his children... so how come Megara and his children are alive here?
I can not reach the text you are reading currently, from Turkiye, how can I find your text?
The recognition scene was awesome!
very helpful, thank you so much!!
The guy playing Strepsiades is genuinely such a good actor
Are those First Aorists at 2:26? Thanks for your feedback.
Hello My name is $cot. And this is my show. Please do not stop making this show. :)
Εὐχαριστῶ τῷ μαθήματι.
Wow, what a great performance! The actor who portrayed Strepsiades is incredibly talented.
«Μὴν τράγῃς τὸ παγωτὸν τὤρᾳ.» [“Do not eat the ice cream now.”]
When you started writing freehand I couldn't even believe how shit it was.
Great performance, thank you!
Ἐξ Ἀθηνῶν, ἔρχομαι (9:05). Συγχαρητήρια ἐπὶ τοῖς μαθήμασιν ὑμῶν.
I am teaching modern Greek and your videos make me understand my mother tongue better.
What edition of the textbook does this follow? Thank you very much!
What translation is this?
In the vocative, the ultimate is short.
Excellent, excellent video, great conversation. This is an extremely useful resource for students, I look forward to watching your other play readings. Thank you!
Why does this begin partway through Megara's dialogue and omit the previous Amphitryon dialogue?
Time to learn some Ancient Greek.
This performance is powerful and helped me understand the whole work, not just one character. Brilliant!
What's an example of vocative in english? ....Yooo. 🤣I'm dead.
sage professor and true beauty assisstant. I ADORE YOU PROFESSOR~~~>
Excellent!
Thank you for this wonderful reading!
How I identify the participles?
Hello CHS, there was another video covering this subject that was set to private for some reason. Please reconsider, there are not nearly enough videos about this.
So great to see familiar faces: Rene, Gregory. Using this to teach Clouds this semester, and we are all rolling!
Ok I am here to ask the important questions: what highlighter is Aphrodite wearing because she is RADIANT AF
Yeah man they must've been misogynistic because they implied that... women might appreciate clothing. And yeah, totally, they clearly "feminize" the Persians because what else might their vulnerability & fall from grace be but a reference to the ever-lesser sex, am I right? Christ man, I hate modern analysis. People just huff their own supply & signal how much holier we are for our latest modern pretensions. Solid acting though.
Insightful discussion - thank you!
This helped me with one of my classes. Thanks for the video!
Never since the birth of the Met have two voices been so horribly married - very Tistan und Kleopateras
9😢😮😮
It's a bit hard to hear what you're saying
Very well done everyone! Thank you 🙏
Still waiting to hear greek
You taught me nothing!! Congratulations
Fake shit
Thank you. This, as with all of your videos, is very helpful. I return to your videos often, even long after I initially learned a concept, to have my understanding fine-tuned.
This was very helpful for learning the middle voice at UC Berkeley. Do you happen to know in which Benveniste book he discusses this?
Hello Dr. Muellner. I'm a great admirer of your work. Could you point me to a monograph or article that comprehensively addresses "kinesthesis" from an ancient Greek perspective? I know of no other person I can contact to help! Many thanks!
